FURTHER INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS FOR MOLESEY

The summer of successes continued for Molesey last weekend when Molesey's athletes and coaches competed at the Coupe de la Jeunesse which was held in Vichy, France.  The Coupe is an international junior regatta and is seen as a vital pathway for international rowers who represent Great Britain.

Molesey was represented by the following athletes and coaches:

  • Hannah Waltham-Hier - Women's Quad
  • Miles Neary - Men's Eight
  • Neasa Folan - Head Coach and crew coach of the Men's Four
  • Ed Green - Coach - Women's Quad.

Both Hannah and Miles WON GOLD on both days against strong European competition.   A full report will be added very soon on this website.

Congratulations to both rowers and coaches on further brilliant results for Molesey!

Next weekend sees Molesey's Matt Tatlock and Nick Clarke represent GB at the World Junior Championships in Brive, France.

Can't get enough of Henley?  Even for a rainy summer day, this regatta is a pleasurable day of racing down just over 1K of the Henley course.  Even with many members away on summer breaks, Molesey had five members racing including Colette Abel, Courtenay Hallwood, Andrew Wicklund, Mark Buchinger and Paul Keane.

The duo of Colette Abel & Courtenay Hallwood (aka C2) tested themselves in both the women's IM1 Pair and the IM2 Double.  Having got to the finals, there was an additional test for the "pit crew" since there was only just enough time to convert the boat from pair to double between their two finals!  With convincing wins against Vesta in the Pair and Twickenham in the double, they had their arms full of silverware for the paddle back to the landing stage.

Mark Buchinger competed in a composite 8 but lost out in the final to a Marlow/Henley composite being stroked by Zac Purchase.

Andrew Wiklund lost out to Paul Keane (racing as London!) in the Sen 1x final.

GOLD AT U23 WORLD CHAMPS

Gold was the colour that Michelle Vezie took home as a member of the winning GB Women's Eight at the U23 World Championships held last week in Racice, Czech Republic.  The crew led from the start and held off a strong challenge from the US eight (US has won the last 2 world Champs).  This is the first time a British Women's Eight has won a World Championship.

Further Molesey participation was from Mo Sbihi and James Foad in the Men's Pair who came 2nd in the B final and Ruth Walczak who came 5th in the Women's Coxless four.

Michelle has now headed off to Briesach to train with the Senior Women's eight for the World Championships.

Congratulations to all the Molesey members!

Molesy Lightweight Ladies are National Champs!

After the disappointment of disqualification at Henley Women's Regatta, Molesey Lightweight Ladies of Sam Hammond, Debbie Pyke, Elly Blackwell and Fi Parry were a crew with a point to prove.

Due to the headwind which was only slightly cross, conditions at the start were tricky with a reasonable swell. Nevertheless the start was clean and although some problems clearing waves early on led to a slightly erratic steering through the first 250, a steady rhythm carried the crew to 500m with the bowball in front of a three-way battle for the lead. A powerful 5 consolidated the rhythm and Molesey started to pull away. In spite of a strong push from Mortlake coming into the 1000m mark, the crew stayed confident and clean, with a consistent rhythm at 33, to hold an advantage of about a length of clear water over MAABC at 1500m. As conditions improved over the last 500m, Molesey steadily rowed away from the crews behind, to finish 5 lengths clear of last years winning gold medallists and 5 seconds quicker than this years Gold winning Lightweight Womens Quad Sculls. This has wetted the appetite to go for double gold next year.

The crew would like to thank Andy Graham (Runner) and Paul Thorpe for their support and coaching over the weeks leading up to HWR and Nat champs. It really did make the difference.

Henley Veterans Regatta, on Friday and Saturday 10th/11th July, saw only two all-Molesey crews competing this year, and both won their events.

A vetB 4- fresh’n’sharp from their foray in the Wyfolds at Henley Royal comprising Magnus, Karl, Runner and Telf; and a vetC 2x of Magnus and Runner.

First up was the 2x for Friday’s heats, beating both Bewl Bridge and Cambridge BC (US) comfortably.
