This is an exerpt from Chris Martin's Blog of his crossing of the Pacific (Read more on his site):
Over the last 2 days we’ve been clawing our way north east and both Mick and I have started to notice a change. This is that the shifts have become noticably more difficult to pull ourselves out of bed to get stuck into. We crawl out of the cabin as fully prepared as possible which normally means that most of the clothing we want to wear is on but generally that we’re missing one thing - Concious thought.
It’s amazing that we can move around the boat get out of the hatch ready to row and then wake up but I assure you it’s possible. Unfortuntely that isn’t the only thing that sleep deprivation means. Utter mental abberation seems to be the other main effect of the reigeme that we find ourselves under. Most of the watches are two hours long, allowing the man resting a reasonable sleep and the man rowing to get into a decent rhythm. However on a number of occasions I’ve found myself standing ready to jump onto the oars only to be told by Mick that I have another hour to sleep before it’s my watch. The amusing thing is that on one occasion when I emerged from the cabin only to be told that I had another hour’s sleep I didn’t and it was Mick that had got it wrong. Oh dear!
