Ten veteran MBC members, five of whom were in the I/H categories, together with friends and partners travelled to Krakow during September to see the sights and to row on the Vistula. Our hosts were members of the Krakow rowing club, and they provided an eight and a support boat.
The main attraction was a ten kilometre row to the 11th century Benedictine abbey at Tyniec where we had a guided tour, and then enjoyed a substantial lunch before rowing back to Krakow.
The city itself is one of the loveliest in Europe, and features among its attractions a magnificent castle and a variety of beautiful churches. There is also an old University that numbers among its alumni the great Copernicus.
Being dedicated oarsmen and women, the crew scarcely had time to notice the excellent food and beer, both of which were offered at very reasonable prices.
Many of us also found time to visit Auschwitz/ Birkenau concentration camp (a sobering experience) and the local Wieliczka Salt Mines, which uniquely house an underground Cathedral.
Our thanks go to Margaret Fleming, a member of both clubs, for liaising with the KRC and to Artur Lesniak, both for his brave attempts to speak English and for providing the boats.
