In the final run in to the Head of the River, Molesey 1st and 2nd VIII’s have had some dust ups on the Tideway with Oxford and Cambridge Universities. On Sunday 21st, the 1st VIII, on Surrey took on the Light Blues and in the first piece from the Boat Race start to the far end of Harrods won by about ½ a length having been a similar distance down on the outside of the Fulham Bend. In a second piece from the beginning of Chiswick Eyot to the Boat Race finish Molesey dominated early on and by the bandstand had stretched out a length and a half which they maintained to the end.
On Wednesday 24th, a slightly altered line up took on Oxford. The first piece, due to be five minutes, saw Molesey on the outside of the Surrey bend take half a length out of the Dark Blues, approaching Harrods the margin was almost a length when the race had to be abandoned due to a strangely placed red buoy. The second race, from the Mile Post to past Hammersmith Bridge, saw some clashing after a minute and Molesey came out stronger and finished ¾ of a length up after 3 ½ minutes.
The 2nd VIII raced Goldie and after an early lead on the outside of the Surrey station, clashing saw the race being restarted and Molesey started and finished a third of a length down by. Goldie won the second piece after slipping away on the inside of the Hammersmith bend. Though not a victorious encounter, it was valuable and enjoyable reminder of what river racing is all about.
