Wallingford Regatta (or maybe "Wellingford"!)

E-mail Print PDF

By 9.30am having been at Dorney for two hours and now completely soaked through, I was ready to go home!  If I had, I would probably have missed one of the most enjoyable regattas I’ve been to without getting into a boat or having a blazer on!

Why? Well, for me here are some of the main reasons:

MBC Together- Juniors and Seniors in the same gazebo mixing, eating and resting together - we’ll be taking delivery of a new one next week, I hope its going to be big enough!  Without doubt, the days of preparation by Marcia and Geoff beforehand played had a big hand in this, so thank you!

Helping and Supporting – It didn’t matter who you were or which squad you were in, you were a Molesey member and people helped and supported each other.

Competing - Yes, we won a couple of events, a lot of events we were very competitive in despite the very strong cross wind and some events we’ve got more work to do.  The full results are here at: http://www.wallingford.regatta.org.uk/regatta-results/results2010/index.html

Organisation – The coaches who organised and arranged the required boats for all our competitors which resulted in having to take two full trailers, which we will be doing again for Bedford.  Making sure each crew was looked after before and then debriefed after each race.

Win Easy - For me this was one of the main reasons it was a great day as we didn’t go for this option, instead over the winter we opted for Development.  This is why we’ve had 17 & 18 year old boys racing and training with the Men’s Senior squad.  They could have raced IMI something and won easily but what would they have learnt, would they have maximised their potential?  As we progress into this year, it is something the younger age groups need to appreciate.

Another example of this is how some a group of Junior Girls aged between 15 to 18 have accepted there is more than one way to approach training, they and they’re parents never questioned it, they just got on with it.

To use a Clarkson, “Some Say” I’m probably slightly bias, as I’ve had some involvement with this group over the winter whilst they were in Quads.  This year, they rowed the VIII twice, once on camp and then the day before the regatta, but they didn’t doubt their coach Ed, they just got on with it.  How did they do?  They came third behind Headington and LEH two very established schools who dominated the top positions at the Schools Head.  Third, 15 seconds ahead of fourth.  Girls, well done!

There are of course other moments to talk about; I still have to finish a conversation with Tex about naming boats, with Olly and his impersonation of a Mushroom Cloud, how we can raise money to improve our equipment generally but especially £2,000 to have the Project Oarsome boats refurbed which will be equally matched by GB Rowing, how we need to start thinking and planning for next season now, not on the 1st September.

If you feel you’ve missed out or would like to see what a “Frankie Finish” is, then we’ll have representation at Bedford, National Schools & Championships, Metropolitan, Marlow, Reading, Molesey, and of course Woman’s Henley and HRR.  Or, over the next month some of those who raced yesterday will also be at Munich and Duisburg.

Thanks again to everybody for yesterday that made it a very memorable day!

Big thanks to Geoff, the Hallwoods and Bullzants for the Molesey indoor space
outdoors - much needed and much appreciated! And thanks coaches for smooth
running despite all the regatta's delays. pykie

Great to see one MBC at Wallingford, Mr Pugh in moment coaching his junior crews
and the next lugging his old mate Ollie down the course!

Great job Molesey! Good luck for the rest of the season, wee you in Nottingham!
