Molesey Successes at National Master's Rowing Champs

Molesey’s super vets Magnus, Karl, Andy and Telfyn brought home double gold from the National Master’s Rowing Championships this weekend 13th June 2010.

The crew racing in their brand new christened boat “Eyjafjallajökull” stormed to victory in the final of the Masters B and C coxless fours finals racing six abreast over 1000m.

The only controversy of the day was in the final of the B final when the crew attached themselves to the stake boats six minutes before the off. The weather was raining cats and dogs with a howling head wind.  The starting marshal gave us the minute countdown to race then suddenly at two minutes from time it was “come forward ready to race, Attention, Go!” Telfyn pictured ended up racing in his gilet. Notwithstanding this the crew managed to romp home to an easy victory in a time of 3’22”.

Molesey’s Veteran D women’s quad of Fe, Mo, Andrea and Liz also won gold against Walbrook which was a closely fought contest up to the 500m mark. The hours of training under the expert eye of Dan proved itself when Molesey pulled away to an emphatic victory. Well done and many thanks must go to Dan.

Roll on Henley Vets which takes place the weekend after Henley Royal.

Well done to both crews, particularly Andy and Magnus who have dominated Veteran
B & C in the double for the last 25 years or so and now hopefully the 4-!

avatar Sunday morning arrived and we all squeezed into one car, carbon footprint aware
as ever, and set off. The music on the cd was, according to the girls in the
back, worse than dreadful......everyone like the Jackson 5’s greatest
hits....don’t they? We made a quick coffee stop, and noticed a group of sporty
looking chaps wearing “Black Death” t-shirts.....it was the “Super Vets”, also
on their way to Nottingham! - Small world!

Anyway despite the awful music we arrived at Nottingham to be greeted by amazing
weather! No rain, no wind to speak of and lots of sunshine – it was going to be
a great day.

Our race was at 2.15, so we went and walked the course, going through our race
plan. Chris, as “directeur sportif” for the day, made sure that we all kept
hydrated and rested in the shade.

Once there, we saw Dave (Gillings) and Charles (Bowman) who just missed out in
their double by 1 second (well done and better luck at ...
