World Cup II - Munich

I think the saying ‘Good . . . but more speed to come’ applies to all those involved from Molesey this weekend. I think we’re all excited about donning a black and white Lycra at Henley Royal and also looking forward to Lucerne, which follows.

In the pairs event, Hodgey and Pete Reed led the charge, destroying all those that lined up against them. This had Jurgen salivating over a mouth-watering final to see how they would fair against their all-black rivals. Myself and Tom Burton felt we had a good few races and were pleased to beat the South African pair in the A final coming 5th overall. The race out front was a stormer . . . apparently (it’s fair to say we never really saw much of them!). I’m sure you’ve all seen the race on telly but if you haven’t – WATCH IT!! Never more than a canvas in it, it was a real gladiatorial war resulting in the gap between pairs closing to 0.7 seconds. This time just on the wrong side of the verdict but I have every confidence that our captain will MAN UP and beat those really ugly looking kiwis!

The other event that was strong in Molesey representation was the Men’s Eight / “The Greg Searle Eight.” All in the engine room, Mo Sbihi, James Foad and the Golden Oldie showed once again that the 8 is a serious medal candidate and they are at the heart of its success. A great heat showed real speed against a tasty Polish 8 and strong crews in the form of Russia and Romania. After a day of vuvuzela-ing after a direct route to the final, the 8 had a disappointing row in the final but it was great to see that a disappointing row still results in a place on the rostrum.

I think it’s fair to say everyone at the club is looking forward to Henley Royal and we should have some great representation not only in the international events, but also in some Elite Club events as well. We’re looking forward to seeing Pete Marsland back in action after some time away with back issues and we’re also keen to see the Molesey rhythm out in force in the Ladies, Thames and Visitors events.

That’s all from me, here’s to a good HRR and rest of the season. Good so far . . . but more to come.
