Last Friday and Saturday (10-11 July) saw Henley Veterans Regatta, a lovely two day regatta over 1000m of the Henley course starting just upstream of Temple Island and finishing just before Upper Thames. The weather was scorching, touching 30 degrees, but accompanied by a stiff headwind over the whole two days. Molesey was represented this year by two crews in three events, a Mens coxless four (Telf, Runner, Karl and Magnus) in categories B and C, and a Womens D quad (Liz, Andrea, Mo and Fe).
The Mens C 4- won both their events, six races over three days (a proper regatta), while the Womens quad narrowly lost to a TSS quad with whom they were trading a slender margin down the course.
In contrast to last year several crews showed up in the Mens B and C coxless four expecting the regatta to be easy pickings. These included a former Wyfolds-winning line-up (Worcester RC) who were finally killed off only with a rarely used last-30-rate-40. Both the B and C final saw Molesey lined up against two different crews from Tyrian Club, who have dominated C fours in recent years. Richard Budgett, drafted in to strengthen Tyrians’s C crew after Nottingham, was one of the unfortunate victims.
A potential problem was narrowly avoided as the B final was scheduled just four minutes after a G (65-70 years!) double sculls race. Towards the end of the race to the great concern of Telf the steersman Molesey were rapidly catching the doubles, and at the end were only a length and a half behind!
