Molesey Boat Club Welcomes You

Molesey's Tough Guy

E-mail Print PDF

Tough Guy bills itself as “the safest most dangerous event in the world” and it claims to be the world’s most demanding one day survival ordeal. It’s organised by Billy Wilson on a farm near Wolverhampton and there have been 25 stagings of the winter event. They’ve had two fatalities: heart attacks and having done it I can see why. It’s actually a cross country run with lots of obstacles on the way. It took me 2 hours and 45 minutes but I was so cold at the end I forgot to check my time.

I deliberately didn’t read any of the blurb about it beforehand because I didn’t want to put myself off. I now know that every year up to a third of the participants fail to complete it, mostly due to hypothermia. When you arrive at the event you have to sign a “Death Warrant”, which claims to absolve the organisers of any responsibility for injury.

MBC are now accepting registrations for beginner rowing camps being held this Spring on  02-06 April, and 09-13 April

The beginner’s rowing camp offers an exciting five days for 13-15 year olds to experience the life of a rower.  Molesey Boat Club has built a strong reputation as one of the best rowing clubs in the country, providing excellent training facilities for athletes of all abilities from juniors and novices to Olympians.  Throughout the five days your son or daughter will spend the majority of time on the water in mixed octuples, quads and singles. They will also spend sessions on the rowing machines and will take part in training circuits. The rowing machine sessions allow us to go through the rowing sequence in a stable environment, spending time perfecting each stage of the stroke. The training circuit is an all over body workout focusing on muscles that are essential for a strong rowing stroke.

Harry Pickett

Harry Pickett died on 18th December after a long and courageous fight against illness.

He joined the club in 1953 becoming first eight stroke, committee stalwart, President and Vice-President during his years in the club. He worked hard in many roles, the latest of which was a big contribution to the development of the club house which was finished in 2005.

Many club members have expressed their sympathy individually. This note is on behalf of all members of the club in recognition of the passing of such a stalwart.

The funeral will take place at 11am on Thursday 5th January at Randalls Park Crematorium, Leatherhead. The family have asked for no flowers, but if anyone would like to, donations to St Luke's Cancer Centre, Guildford, would be most appreciated.

Ted Bates

Club Secretary
