Squads

Molesey has a large group of athletes who compete at an international level, as well as many who have previously competed at an international level, but still get together to row at a very high standard.  This section describes their groups.

Strong Showing for Molesey at GB Trials and a Win for Club Captain.

For the first time in 3 years the GB Squad and its aspirants descended upon Boston, Lincolnshire for the annual December 5km Trial. The last two years have been cancelled due to snow and ice and this year nearly went the same way. However it was a balmy 1 degree C on the day and with a light tailwind conditions could actually be considered good for once!

Club Captain Andrew Hodge illustrated his dominance within the Men's Squad and won the trial with Alex Partridge from Leander Club after his regular partner, Pete Reed, withdrew. In 2nd place was Molesey's Mo Sbihi with Alex Gregory (Leander) both normally rowing with Molesey members James Foad and Tom James respectively. In 3rd place was Molesey's George Nash, with youngster Stan Louloudis, they pipped the all Molesey pair of Cam Nichol and Greg Searle by 0.3 of a second. Molesey also took 6th and 7th places with Ben Smith and Dan Ouseley finishing 6.5 seconds adrift of the 5th placed Langridge and Egington from the World Champion 4-which is encouraging after not racing in April due to illness and made them the fastest non-squad pair of the day. Their club mates, Phil Congdon and Ritchie Steele, had a good row to finish as the next fastest pair in 7th position. This means that out of 23 pairs, boats with Molesey athletes occupied 6 of the top 7 positions and had 9 out of those 14 athletes- not a bad day for the Club especially as the two fastest non-GB Squad pairs came from our ISPS and Skipton sponsored Club athletes.

Molesey Success at GB National Team Assessments

On Sunday 17th April on a flat calm Dorney Lake, venue for the 2012 Olympic Rowing, the Finals of the GB National Team Assessments took place. The last race of the day was the blue riband event and the bank was well lined with spectators and rowers who had finished. The standard of this final was outstanding with world medallists abound and 4 Olympic Champions- 3 of them from Molesey; Greg, Hodge and TJ. Hodge was with his regular partner Peter Reed of Leander, TJ with Alex Gregory, also of Leander. Greg has been paired with Molesey's Cam Nichol and Mo and James, the MBC regulars, were also in the field. Langridge and Ritchie of Leander made up the only full Leander pair while the youngsters on the block were Stan Louloudis of Oxford and Molesey's George Nash, currently on loan to Cambridge. 6 Molesey athletes (7 if you include George!) made up the field of 12.

GB Trials Report

The weekend of 12th/13th saw the GB February Trial take place at Dorney lake. It followed the format of a time trial, followed by semi's and then by final's. This year, due to a bad weather forecast for Sunday, it was all run in one day and while this meant 3 flat out races in a day for athletes, and a long, long, time on the stop watch for coaches, on the plus side we all got Sunday off!

Molesey had 14 oarsmen/women competing- some as a part of the National Team, others as club athletes aspiring to join the National team. MBC Captain, with perennial partner Pete Reed of Leander, finished 2nd in the Time Trial, just ahead of club mates James Foad and Mo Sbihi. Tom Ransley finished 5th, Greg Searle 6th, Cam Nichol 7th, Karl Hudspith- (MBC 2007 and ex-Hampton) 8th, Ben Smith and Fred Gill 9th, Dan Ouseley and George Nash (currently studying at CUBC but a member of MBC) finished 10th. 10th place was 6 seconds off 4th indicating how tight it all is at that top end. In the singles, Henry Pelly finished 15th, Peter Marsland 26th, Josh Tonnar 30th and Karen Bennett finished 44th in the Women's. Lightweights were thrown in with the Heavyweights which made for even tighter margins!

Six Molesey Athletes into A Final of Men's Pairs.

In two superb semi-final in today's (Saturday 16th April) Final GB Assessment held at Dorney Lake, Molesey's Captain Andrew Hodge won one semi-final while his fellow Olympic Champion Tom James won the other. The standard and closeness of the field had to be seen to be believed; Mo Sbihi and James Foad finished 3rd in TJ's semi about half a boat length back with George Nash (on loan to CUBC!) and OUBC's Stan Louloudis split the two boats. Tom Ransley was a very narrow 4th behind Mo and James. Hodgy and his perennial partner Pete Reed held off our very own Greg Searle and Cam Nichol who timed supreb race to finish 2nd, with 4th place again only about half a length back.

World Cup II - Munich

I think the saying ‘Good . . . but more speed to come’ applies to all those involved from Molesey this weekend. I think we’re all excited about donning a black and white Lycra at Henley Royal and also looking forward to Lucerne, which follows.
