As with some other long-established clubs, our forefathers decided to protect MBC by establishing a financially and organisationally independent Committee whose principal purpose is to run associated Regattas and Heads. The MAR Committee, consisting of a President (currently David Porteous) and 12 others, run the Regatta, the Junior Regatta, the Masters Head and the recently created Junior Head.

In addition to avoiding event losses being a drain on the club, MAR aims to support MBC and rowing generally by making the events successful from a sports, community and finance perspective. It relies very much on the support of MBC members, the use of MBC facilities, Friends contributions and sponsors. It maintains a small cash balance to cushion against losses and makes regular contributions to the club. In 2018 it bought a Janosek (recently named “Midsummer”) and 4 sets of blades, totalling approximately £5,000.

You can be part of this by becoming a Friend. It costs £20 a year. Friends receive complimentary Regatta parking, a programme and some refreshment. They, like sponsors, do not need to be MBC members although most are. You might also like to encourage others to become Friends (such as relatives) so that our events continue to flourish for another 150 years.

For more information see the two MAR websites: the Regatta and the Heads (

Don’t forget that the 153rdRegatta takes places on 20/21July, 2019 - next year’s Heads take place February 15th. If you would like to help at the events or join Friends, please contact:
