Home And Away - Met and Ratzeburg Regatta Roundups

The start of June saw the first main regattas of the season. After winning the Victor Lodorum at Ghent Regatta and a successful camp out in Hazewinkel, Met Regatta was the first opportunity for our Senior Squad to test early Henley Womens Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta combinations.

Met Regatta:

Our Brit boat showed some promising speed, with a win in Champ 4+ on the Saturday, beating crews from Imperial College, Kingston and Durham. Our GB team hopefuls also picked up wins on the Saturday, with Becca Edwards teaming up with Nicole Lamb from Sheffield University to win Women's Champ 2-, and Molly Harding teaming up with Lola Anderson from Newcastle University for a win in Women's Champ 2x. Both of these athletes performed exceptionally well and continue to gain favour with the GB selectors.

On the Sunday, our men picked up two more wins, in Tier 2 4- and Champ 2x with our Brit 4+ showing good speed again to place 3rd in Champ 4+ behind two Oxford Brookes crews. Becca

Edwards repeated her performance from the previous day to come away with another win with her partner in Women's Champ 2-.

Ratzeburg Regatta:

Following on from Met regatta, four of our crews headed out to Ratzeburg to race at the 60th Ratzeburg International Regatta. Often used as a German National team selection regatta, the competition out was red hot, with crews competing from all over Europe, and even a Japanese contingent! Unfortunately racing was largely cancelled on the Saturday due to wind conditions, so all the remaining races were packed into Sunday.

Our Women's Quad and Four enjoyed some valuable racing against top opposition, placing 4th in the 4- and 5th in the 4x. Both crews then joined forces to places 2nd in the Womens 8 in a scratch boat! On the men's side, our resident Zimbabwean Olympic hopefuls, Steve and Pete, placed 4th in the 2x, gaining further racing experience ahead of the World Cups.

The highlight of the regatta was our Men's Eight, who managed to win both days events, dispatching a german u23 8.

The Athlete Support fund made this weekend possible by covering the cost of minibus hire for each of the crews. A huge thankyou to all the Athlete Support fund donors for making these trips possible. Onwards to the Henley regattas!
