Sad Passing Of John Russell

January 30, 2019

You may have noticed that the Club flag is flying at half mast. It’s with great sadness that one of the Club Legends Johnny Russell passed away on Monday 21st January.

Johnny was born 3rd August 1935 and by the time he was 19 he won the scullers head. He also won the Wingfield Sculls in 1959. In 1960 he won both the Grand Challenge Cup and Stroked the winning Stewards Challenge Cup in the same afternoon. This was followed by wining the Stewards again in 1963.

He then went on to win a Olympic Silver medal in Tokyo in 1964. For me and for many members he is fondly remembered as a great captain and Ambassador of the Club between 1982 and 1984 welcoming in new members with a pint of beer.

He created a competitive and sociable club which was the basis of the foundations for where we are today. He will be sadly missed. He leaves behind his wife Maggie, his son Mark, daughter Louise and grandchildren.
