Molesey Boat Club Welcomes You

Harry Pickett

E-mail Print PDF

Harry Pickett died on 18th December after a long and courageous fight against illness.

He joined the club in 1953 becoming first eight stroke, committee stalwart, President and Vice-President during his years in the club. He worked hard in many roles, the latest of which was a big contribution to the development of the club house which was finished in 2005.

Many club members have expressed their sympathy individually. This note is on behalf of all members of the club in recognition of the passing of such a stalwart.

The funeral will take place at 11am on Thursday 5th January at Randalls Park Crematorium, Leatherhead. The family have asked for no flowers, but if anyone would like to, donations to St Luke's Cancer Centre, Guildford, would be most appreciated.

Strong Showing for Molesey at GB Trials and a Win for Club Captain.

For the first time in 3 years the GB Squad and its aspirants descended upon Boston, Lincolnshire for the annual December 5km Trial. The last two years have been cancelled due to snow and ice and this year nearly went the same way. However it was a balmy 1 degree C on the day and with a light tailwind conditions could actually be considered good for once!

Club Captain Andrew Hodge illustrated his dominance within the Men's Squad and won the trial with Alex Partridge from Leander Club after his regular partner, Pete Reed, withdrew. In 2nd place was Molesey's Mo Sbihi with Alex Gregory (Leander) both normally rowing with Molesey members James Foad and Tom James respectively. In 3rd place was Molesey's George Nash, with youngster Stan Louloudis, they pipped the all Molesey pair of Cam Nichol and Greg Searle by 0.3 of a second. Molesey also took 6th and 7th places with Ben Smith and Dan Ouseley finishing 6.5 seconds adrift of the 5th placed Langridge and Egington from the World Champion 4-which is encouraging after not racing in April due to illness and made them the fastest non-squad pair of the day. Their club mates, Phil Congdon and Ritchie Steele, had a good row to finish as the next fastest pair in 7th position. This means that out of 23 pairs, boats with Molesey athletes occupied 6 of the top 7 positions and had 9 out of those 14 athletes- not a bad day for the Club especially as the two fastest non-GB Squad pairs came from our ISPS and Skipton sponsored Club athletes.

Scullers Head - For the first time!

E-mail Print PDF

The Vesta Scullers Head on the Tideway is one of those landmark events that any aspiring Sculler needs to do if only to get a bit of street-cred with the guys at the club. For the skiers amongst you it’s like nailing a nasty black run first thing in the morning !

I was lucky to have an invitation to join Dave Jillings at his Tideway club for a couple of outings during the week before the race proper. The drive down to the Civil Service Club wasn’t looking good with high winds and rain. I figured that Dave would give it a miss due to the weather but I was wrong ! Lets paddle up to the start and then I will take you down the course and show you where to go !

It would be fair to say this was a baptism of fire with a good wind over tide chop stopping me in my tracks and then a bit of advice about what to do and general instructions to get on with it ! The route down- stream was explained in detail with instructions to keep in the deep water to get maximum benefit from the ebb tide and the river and sweeping around the outside of centre on the bends instead of cutting the corners. There was also details about keeping away from Fulham Football Ground ( not something I have had a problem with in the past ) as there is a shallow bank on that side. Finally, getting the cross over at Hammersmith Bridge, under the second lamp post on the right, before the black buoy and on to the finish. How was I going to remember all this stuff on race day ? Once at Putney Bridge it was time to turn around and head in to the river and last of the tide back to the club.  I know this does not make sense but it seemed to me that the wind was against us both ways. We got back to the club having done my first 10 miles in a single on the Tideway and it felt a real sense of achievement and tired !
